Buying decisions

Comparisons for a citrus buying decision

Five questions a buyer settles before an order, each answered with the numbers side by side. Where another origin wins a week, this says so.

Variety comparison

Which of our varieties fits which week, and what changes on the order when you swap one for another.

Origin comparison

Spain against the origins that compete with it, read from the agricultural attaché reports rather than from our own sales pitch.

What we do not grow

The weeks our own harvest does not cover, and who does cover them.

Why a grower publishes comparisons that he loses

Two of the five pages below hand weeks of the calendar to somebody else. One says plainly that after April the fruit a European buyer wants is coming out of Egypt, and another that the clementine category through the spring belongs to Moroccan Nadorcott and Afourer, neither of which grows here. A third exists only to answer a question about May and June with the words we do not grow it.

That is deliberate. A buyer planning a year of supply already knows where the gaps in Spanish citrus fall; pretending otherwise costs an afternoon of everybody's time and the relationship afterwards. What the comparisons are for is the other direction. When the weeks are ours, the case is made against real numbers from somebody else's report rather than against adjectives from ours.

Where the numbers in these tables come from

The origin comparisons are built on the citrus annuals that agricultural attachés file for their posts, because those are the only documents about Egyptian and Moroccan citrus that can be cited, checked and dated by anybody reading this page. It is not the obvious source. It is the one that survives a buyer clicking the link.

The rule inside each table is one source per column, and a fact that has no source does not become a row. Where a figure exists for our side and not for theirs, the row says so instead of estimating, which is why some cells read as a refusal. A comparison with a hole in it is still worth more than a comparison with a guess in it.
