A family block in the town where Spanish citrus is kept clean
The Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Agrarias has its campus in Moncada, on the road out of the village. Its citrus germplasm bank and its programme for the sanitary improvement of citrus varieties have run since 1975, and the disease free material released there is the starting point for the certified nursery trees planted across Spain.
This is an ordinary family planting and we claim no connection to that work. What it says about the place is worth writing down all the same: in Moncada, citrus plant health is a professional subject with an institution attached, and a grower here lives among people who do it for a living.
Planted in 1993, and what the year does and does not tell you
Trees planted in 1993 have been bearing for most of the last three decades. The establishment years are long gone, the canopy is at full size, and the block has a settled habit that the grower knows by heart. Age is the most useful thing we can state about these trees with certainty.
It is far from the whole picture. Rootstock decides much of how a mature tree behaves, and the rootstock under this block is not recorded, so the field stays empty instead of being filled with whatever most nurseries were selling that year. Irrigation method and water source sit in the same position.
Navel Foios through midwinter
Navel oranges in this part of Valencia are picked from the start of December to the end of February, which places this block in the middle of the campaign, after the early navels and ahead of the late ones. The fruit is seedless and intended for the table.
Sizes are the question a buyer asks next, and the cultivar does not settle them on its own. What gets packed from a block depends on the season and on the tree, so the sensible way to read this page is as a statement of origin, with the size breakdown agreed separately.
