The late block that carries the back half of the season
Navel Lane Late is an Australian bud mutation of Washington Navel, found in the 1950s on the land of the grower whose name it carries. It colours and ripens several weeks after its parent and then holds on the tree for months once it is ready, which is the commercial point of a late navel.
Picking in this region runs from the second half of January into the second half of April. Set against the navel blocks, which are finished by the end of February, it means one grower and one comarca can cover the winter and then keep going into spring without a change of origin.
A flood plain, and what that means in autumn
This planting sits on the Carraixet plain at Alfara del Patriarca. The ravine is dry for most of the year and its catchment is large, so an autumn cold drop can put water across the ground the huerta is built on. The soil here exists because that has been happening for centuries.
It is worth stating plainly. The late window falls after the autumn storms, so the pick itself is rarely the exposed moment, but the trees stand in the plain all year and a bad October is a risk to the crop that follows. Weather is the reason availability is confirmed week by week.
Planted in 1997, with no certification claimed
The Lane Late trees went in four years after the navel blocks, during 1997, and they are mature. That is the fact we hold and can support. Rootstock, irrigation and the number of trees are not recorded, and the page shows them as unconfirmed instead of guessing at them.
Certifications are an empty list, and an empty list is the honest answer. There is no GLOBALG.A.P. or organic certificate behind this fruit today. A buyer whose specification requires one should know that before spending time on a quotation, and not after.
